About This Work
“I love the east end of Hamilton. It embodies all the things that make the city great – the hard work, the charm, and community that makes it all tick. The vista of ‘Empire’ comes from Cannon Street just east of Tim Horton’s Field. If you’ve never been to a Ti-Cats game, it’s just about the most Hamilton of Hamilton things you can do, whether you’re a football fan or not. Hamilton & East End Proud!”

Gordon Leverton, originally from Chatham, Ontario, Canada, is a self-taught artist working at his practice since 2006. Perusing his passion for music, he worked in many facets of the music industry including performance, writing and promotion, which eventually led to fulfillment of his dream of owning his own record store business in Hamilton, Ontario.

After selling the record store, Gordon became a stay-at-home father. During his daily walks with the kids in his new home city, he became fascinated by the inner networks and webs of alleyways and streets. His latent love of art and design soon reemerged, and he was inspired to capture these emotions on canvas.

Leverton breaks down the city into component parts. Shadows, buildings, and skylines, all become part of same plane and transform into pieces of a puzzle. Using acrylic paint, Leverton explores a theme common to the urban experience how community connects us all. All Leverton pieces are original and one-of-a-kind arts pieces – and no two pieces are alike or replicated.

Gordon is known for his “Sight Lines” series, a collection of work inspired from the city of Hamilton, from a bird’s eye view, connecting buildings through a circuitry in a graphic style. Gordon is well-known and regarded in the arts community of Hamilton, and a supporter of young emerging artists. His work has appeared in numerous publications, broadcasting journals and media and is collected internationally.  He is the cofounder of a new project called SOCIAL SPACE – Artist run pop-ups art shows in various urban spaces in the GTHA communities. He makes his home in Hamilton with his partner Nancy, two children and cat Hugo, typically by side in his home studio.
