About This Work
“This 48” x 24” oil painting, ‘The View of Burlington Bay by the Skyway Bridge’, features sweeping clouds at sunset over Burlington Bay. The painting also features four cargo ships strategically placed across the water to provide a sense of scale to the vastness of the clouds. The inspiration for this painting was to capture the awe-inspiring grandeur of nature and emphasize our place as human beings in it.”
Biography
Heather Bridge is an artist from Hamilton, Ontario. She explores light and dark themes in her paintings by using contrasting values. The vibrant colours and bold brushstrokes create work that feels bright and optimistic.
After graduating with a degree in Studio Art from the University of Guelph in 2010, she pursued a diploma in Graphic Design at Mohawk College. These design skills cemented her understanding of composition and design theory which is visible in her work today. Heather is currently creating a series of larger landscape paintings that draw on the human experience in nature.
Artist Statement
As an artist, I strive to capture those fleeting moments in nature where we feel a deep connection to something greater than ourselves. Whether it is subtle flickers of sunlight through the trees or a dramatic sunset, these experiences inspire my work. My main body of work is landscape oil paintings that are bold and vibrant. I channel a specific emotion or feeling into each work while also representing how I interpret the beauty of Ontario.
Drawing influence from post-impressionist painters such as Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven, I incorporate bright colours, visible brushstrokes, and a stained canvas in each work. While my approach pays homage to these artists, the style is my own, with a fresh, modern and cohesive feel in each finished work.
Recently, I have included a subtle tension between sharp, geometric shapes and fluid, organic movements in my paintings. By contrasting these elements, I aim to convey the emotional interplay between the beauty and power of our natural world.
