Artist Statement
I love to paint because I have always enjoyed the ability to capture likenesses and, I believe, that I have a unique way of visually presenting things I have seen. I enjoy attempting to interpret and capture the beauty that surrounds me. It may be the quality of light, the composition of the elements, reflected images on the varied surfaces of water, shadows cast, and colours muted and brilliant. I am often unaware of what initially drew me to capture a particular image. Once I’ve decided to paint an image, accidents – happy and otherwise – often take my work in unplanned directions. I work on the piece until it either pleases or confounds me.
Biography
I have been painting landscapes since age 12 when a kindly elderly woman gave me lessons in her home not far from mine. I learned to paint like the impressionists, but in my 20s, my efforts evolved towards realism, having been inspired by Ken Danby and various others. After highschool, I studied graphic design at Humber College Toronto which led to prepress production of business forms, followed by self-employment as a photo retoucher and illustrator. Within a few years of the introduction of Photoshop, I took up painting again while pursuing a couple of odd jobs to pay the bills. In 2013, I became a full-time artist.
