About This Piece
A nighttime constellation of stars and lights, eyes and minds, yours and hers. John Muir wrote that when we tug on any single thing in nature, we find it attached to the rest of the world. Intricately woven fibre echoes these connections, and offers something new to see with every look.
Biography
Mita Giacomini’s bird portraits celebrate our encounters with birds as individuals whose worlds overlay our own, and whose minds offer mysteries. She weaves complex textile images using an original technique she calls “surface weaving”, interlacing wildly varying fibres into nuanced images rich with texture and colour interactions. The effect can resemble post-impressionist painting, but with an added depth of intricacy unique to the fibre medium. The evident time invested in the handwork also acts as part of the medium; like gold leaf, it emphasizes value and care for the subject. Giacomini’s surface weavings have been exhibited at art galleries and museums across Canada, and in the United States, Europe, Australia and Asia, and have won awards for excellence and originality.
