About This Piece
It starts with the belief that our shared values form the core foundation for how we progress as a society, how we navigate both prosperous and challenging times, how we find inspiration, and how we govern ourselves. While individual efforts have their limits, together we can build a diverse and inclusive society where people from divergent backgrounds unite around common shared values. This work is 100% Canadian made – inspired by an alleyway view from James Street North/Barton Street Community (Hamilton).
Biography
An award winning, self-taught, Canadian visual artist, Gordon Leverton's love of the urban environment has informed his painting practice, placing landscape and architectural design at the forefront. In recognition of his artistic work, he achieved the 2024 City of Hamilton Arts Award in the Creator category and 2023 City of Hamilton Art of Heritage Award for his significant role in educating people on Hamilton’s heritage. He was elected to the Ontario Society of Arts (OSA) in December, 2023.
His portrayal of the city’s architectural elements rendered with flattened perspective, bright colors, and strong play of light and shadow has become his signature and recognizable style. Inspired by the hidden networks of alleyways and streets, he transforms buildings, shadows, urban elements and skylines into dynamic compositions that explore the connections between architecture and community. Leverton is currently exploring ways in harmonizing his urban subject matter through abstraction and bringing focus to physical spaces that are overlooked or ignored as traditional subjects of landscape.
In early 2025, Leverton completed his first international art residency in Guadalajara, Mexico, exploring the vast urban Mexico architecture landscape. A new series was created called “Shadows. Text. Colour.” and is on exhibit at #Hashtag Gallery, Mexico City from April-May 2025. He is represented by Canvas Gallery (Canada), Stephanie Breitbard Fine Arts (USA), #Hashtag Gallery (Mexico) and Artsy (Global). His recognizable aesthetic and widespread presence resonate with audiences, forging strong connections through his art and collected in public and private collections throughout Canada, US, Mexico and in other international countries.
