Biography
Catherine Gibbon was one of Hamilton’s foremost artists, a figure of national and international importance, and recognized for her powerfully evocative Canadian landscapes in oil and pastel. As an advocate of cultural and environmental concerns, Catherine’s work concentrates on nature and the environment and its impact on our lives. Her renditions of landscapes, particularly of the sky, are beautifully moving. “Her landscapes are infused with an understanding of the land, its innate power and the ways that that power is stifled or ignited by the human presence.” – David Neil Lee, Building Cultural Legacies.

Born and raised in Hamilton, Catherine trained at McMaster University and Dundas Valley School of Art. She later taught landscape painting at Dundas Valley School of Art and was a mentor to many students and faculty. She was a founding member of the Carnegie Gallery in Dundas and served as president and exhibition curator. Catherine received numerous prizes and awards for her work, as well as many grants from the Ontario Arts Council. Her artworks are included in public, private and corporate collections in Canada, Great Britain, the United States and Kuwait. Catherine had a keen interest in the environment and this was demonstrated by her participation in exhibitions such as “Art for Preservation”. Catherine also authored and edited “On the Edge: Artistic Vision of a Shrinking Landscape” which helped raise money and awareness of the need to protect our fragile environment. She interpreted nature in the Hamilton area as few others do because she looked closely and lovingly under all conditions.
