About This Piece
Wasabi is a sassy rooster that belongs to a friend of mine. I really enjoy the colour, the fun play of the feathers and the bird’s general attitude that brings life and drama to the painting. Here, Wasabi had stepped out of the coop into the sunshine ready to strut his stuff around the barnyard. He truly is hot stuff as his name implies.
Artist Statement
I love mood in a painting, be it a misty diffused soft feeling of a landscape, or the bright combinations of light and shadow, seen on a summers morning. I feel the character and the ambiance of the subject and surroundings in my work which emerges organically during my painting process. I need to be mindful to the reference and what it has to offer, but it is during the act of painting that the spirit of the piece begins to come forward where eventually a reference is not needed and the work begins to speak for itself.
