About This Piece
This painting depicts a view across the lake from my front door in Ontario’s ‘near North’, where I have returned to paint annually for close to 50 years.

‘Deep Breath’ is meant to convey the deep sense of calm and serenity that permeates with each breath taken in this most beautiful spot overlooking the lake. With each breath, layers of stress evaporate, bringing one to a joyous sense of calm and well-being. I still take a breath each time I view this painting, and in so doing, find a sense of renewal and gratitude.

Biography
Over the past 40 years, Holly has explored many genres, including landscape, portrait, and abstraction. Her summer escape to the District of Timiskaming in Northern Ontario inspires the smaller works en plein air, as well as the larger studio paintings. The magical skies, the ever-changing lake, and the crazy Jack Pines never fail to elicit a response.

She has been an instructor at Dundas Valley School of Art since January 2000, teaching drawing and painting classes in portrait, figure, still life, landscape, and abstraction. Holly recently retired from her teaching position at George Brown College, Toronto, in the Design and Media Studies Departments.

Holly's work can be seen at the Carnegie Gallery, in Dundas Ontario. Her works can be found in collections in Canada, the U.S.A., and Italy.

She holds an MFA from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., and a BA from the University of Waterloo.
