About This Piece
For this painting, I placed the fish and platter on a patterned tablecloth and painted the scene from above. With all its busyness, and graphic representation of creatures and plants, the tablecloth works in juxtaposition to the more upright and dimensional fish.
Artist Statement
My paintings of fish, like this one, start with a trip to the market. Fresh fish have been a favourite subject of painters for centuries, from the Dutch Masters to Manet. Perhaps this is because fish are a wonderful painting challenge, with their many textures, their iridescent scales, their gestures and relationships.
Biography
I am a life-long resident of the Dundas area and I am an observational painter. I work in oil, acrylic, ink and collage. I have always painted and my interest in painting led me to more formal classes at DVSA, workshops in France and Italy and private classes. Some of my favourite artists are Vincent Van Gogh, Henri Matisse, and David Hockney. I have a long record of exhibiting my work in Dundas and Hamilton including the Carnegie Gallery, DVSA, the Women’s Art Association, the Art Gallery of Hamilton Sale and Rentals, St. James Church in Dundas, The “In Your Face” show at the AGO, McMaster Innovation Park and the Scottish Rite Temple in Hamilton.
