About This Piece
I made this piece en plein air on a hilltop near Hillsburgh, ON (between Guelph and Orangeville) on a bright green summer’s day. I was presented with a complex patchwork of trees, fields and ridges receding to a distant, hazy horizon. I started with waterproof India ink: finding the bones of the composition with a fine steel dip pen and then strengthening it with a large, long-haired ink brush. The final stages involved finding enough textures and different greens to enhance the perspective and develop the identities of the elements while retaining the freedom of mark-making established with the ink.
