About This Piece
In my current work, I explore the urban landscape and its relationship with nature. The paintings hope to show our deep need for naturalistic surroundings regardless of concrete and steel and show how nature penetrates even the densest of concrete jungles. I love to show the back alley’s canopy of overgrown bushes and weeds, the wildflowers growing out of cracks in the walkways, and how trees surround the entire landscape. As in other paintings of my past, I continue to explore the relationship between nature and the urban landscape.

Biography
Hamilton-based painter James Gummerson studied at Sheridan College of Applied Arts and Technology. During his career as an illustrator, he began to focus on building a painting practice, and within a few years he started exhibiting and showing his work in galleries and shows across Canada. In 2020, he was invited to participate in the TV show, “Landscape Artist of the Year Canada”, featured on CBC, and was the wild card winner of episode one and runner-up in the finals. Over the years his work has been featured in major publications and has won numerous awards. His work explores the relationship between nature and the urban landscape and how they coexist. He is drawn to quiet side streets with their old towering trees, community gardens bursting with colour and life, and back alleys and the secrets within. He is inspired by daily urban life all set against dramatic light and skies.
