About This Piece
A deck or patio space in the inner city feels so vital, especially on a hot summer day.
Turn on the chili pepper lights in the backyard and fill the kiddie pool with ice.
The playlist is ready - just waiting for the guests to arrive.
“Occasion” was created in February 2024, exclusively for the 2024 DVSA auction.

A self-taught artist, Gordon Leverton's love of the urban environment has informed his painting practice, placing landscape and architectural design at the forefront.

Leverton’s portrayal of the city’s architectural elements rendered with flattened perspective, bright colours, and strong play of light and shadow has become his signature style. He further describes his working process:

“I break down the city into component parts. Shadows, buildings, and skylines all become part of the same plane and transform into pieces of a puzzle. Using acrylic paint, I explore a theme common to the urban experience - how community connects us all.”

In December 2023, Gordon was elected as a member of The Ontario Society of Artists (OSA) and was honored with the 2023 Art of Heritage Award from the City of Hamilton & The Hamilton Municipal Heritage Committee for his significant role in educating people on Hamilton’s heritage. He is a nominee for the upcoming 2024 City of Hamilton Creative Awards to be announced in June 2024.

Leverton was invited to participate as a focus group member of the 2023 Locke Street Marker Public Art Project. He currently sits on the McMaster Children’s Hospital Art Advisory Committee, is a member of several guilds and artist groups including Hamilton Artists Inc., and the Hamilton Arts Council, and was the founding member of the West Hamilton Artists Tour. Leverton has been selected to be shown at Toronto Outdoor Art Fair (TOAF) – Canada’s largest outdoor art show for 18 consecutive years.

In 2022 Leverton launched a new project called SOCIAL SPACE: creating pop-up group art shows in urban spaces featuring local/regional emerging and established artists, and donating a portion of sales to charities. His work has appeared in numerous publications, broadcasts, and journals and is widely held in private collections in Canada, the United States, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Europe. Gordon Leverton makes his home in Hamilton with his wife Nancy, two children and cat Hugo, who is typically by his side in his home studio.
