About This Piece
My paintings contain forms which I intend to be suggestive of sources in nature but never so specific that they could be limited to a single interpretation. A direct depiction of an actual observed form, or species, would, I think, fail to contain the metaphorical depiction of processes of becoming, which is more what I'm trying to do. Of course, since our minds need to interpret observed things in such a way as to make them intelligible according to whichever ordering principles we ascribe to, the viewer will often project a "real world" reference onto the image. I don't discourage this, because I think it sets up a tension between legibility and illegibility that keeps the associations open-ended and continually developing. This is also why I don't title the work.
