About This Piece
My paintings contain forms which I intend to be suggestive of sources in nature but never so specific that they could be limited to a single interpretation. A direct depiction of an actual observed form, or species, would, I think, fail to contain the metaphorical depiction of processes of becoming, which is more what I'm trying to do. Of course, since our minds need to interpret observed things in such a way as to make them intelligible according to whichever ordering principles we ascribe to, the viewer will often project a "real world" reference onto the image. I don't discourage this, because I think it sets up a tension between legibility and illegibility that keeps the associations open-ended and continually developing. This is also why I don't title the work.

Hamilton artist, Peter Kirkland, trained at York University and completed his advanced studies at Dundas Valley School of Art. Since then, he has exhibited throughout the region and works out of his studio in downtown Hamilton.
